Spanish football suffered a huge setback this Tuesday in the Champions League: two of their representatives in the quarterfinals, Atlético de Madrid and Barcelona, were eliminated after suffering resounding defeats.
However, the elimination of Barcelona turned out to be good news for Atlético, despite a new and painful failure in the Champions League: the 'colchonero' club assured its presence in the new Fifa Club World Cup, which will be played in 2025 in United States.
Why is Atlético de Madrid going to the World Cup?
Uefa has 12 places in this tournament: the four most recent Champions League winners (Real Madrid -2021-, Chelsea -2022-, Manchester City -2023- and the one crowned this year), and eight per ladder. Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Porto, Benfica and Juventus were already fixed in this way. Atlético de Madrid secured the box in this way.
Barcelona had to remain in competition to fight for that box, so the elimination already sentenced it. There is only one place left: Arsenal aspires for it, but to do so they are obliged to win this edition of the Champions League. This Wednesday they face Bayern Munich.
As the other survivors in the Champions League are already classified, in the event that any of them wins it, the place will be, by ladder, for Salzburg of Austria.
Classifieds from the rest of the world
There are already 11 teams from the rest of the planet with a place in the tournament: Palmeiras, Fluminense and Flamengo from Brazil; León and Monterrey from Mexico, Seattle Sounders from the United States, Al Ahly from Egypt, Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia, Wydad Athletic from Morocco, Urawa Reds from Japan and Auckland City from New Zealand.
Apart from the remaining European quota, between Arsenal and Salzburg, there are nine pending places: one team from the host country, two from Asia (to which Al Ain from the United Arab Emirates, Ulsan HD and Jeonbuk Motors from South Korea and Yokohama aspire Sailors of Japan); two from Africa (with three teams in the fight, Espérance from Tunisia, Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa and Mazembe from Congo); one from Concacaf (which is between América, Pachuca, Columbus Crew or Philadelphia Union), and three from Conmebol (the champion of the current Libertadores and two from the ranks, places that River Plate and Boca Juniors will have today).
