The European Athletics Association (European Athletics) banned Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in competitions under the auspices of their organization. On Wednesday, March 2, it is said in message organizations.
It is noted that this decision also applies to support staff and officials.
Earlier in the day, the International Biathlon Union (IBU) decided to temporarily exclude Russian and Belarusian athletes, as well as officials from international competitions under the auspices of the organization. It was noted that the decision was connected with the Russian operation to protect Donbass.
In turn, the Russian Biathlon Union noted that the Russians will not participate in the remaining stages of the World Cup and the IBU Cup, “so as not to expose Russian athletes to the risk of humiliation and eliminate the threat to their safety.”
According to the RRF, the IBU’s decision “directly violates the fundamental principles of Olympism and the Olympic Charter”, and is also discrimination against the Russian Federation.
On February 25, the IOC called on sports federations to cancel or transfer all competitions from Russia and Belarus.
Such sanctions were a response to the operation carried out by the Russian Federation to protect the Donbass, the beginning of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24. After that, the Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky accused the Russian Federation of hitting the country’s military infrastructure and introduced martial law throughout Ukraine. He also said that Kyiv is breaking off diplomatic relations with Moscow and withdrawing its diplomats from the embassy.
Then the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov clarified that the special operation had two goals – the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. According to him, both of these aspects pose a threat to the Russian state and people.
