RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) – At least 25 suspects in connection with bank robberies died in clashes with police in Minas Gerais during a joint operation between the State Military Police and the Federal Highway Police in the region of the Minas Gerais city of Varginha, the PM reported of Minas this Sunday.
The clashes that resulted in the suspects’ deaths took place in two different approaches in the region. In the first, 18 suspects were killed and in the second another seven.
The joint operation between the PM from Minas Gerais and the PRF targeted the so-called “new cangaço”, groups that had been carrying out robberies on banks and terrorizing smaller cities in the state.
“It was probably the biggest operation in the country against the new cangaço. They would rob a bank probably tomorrow or today and were surprised by our intelligence service integrated with the Federal Highway Police”, said the spokeswoman for the Military Police of Minas Gerais, Layla Brunnela, adding that intelligence agents had been coming for some time. monitoring the group.
During the operation, according to the Military Police, large-caliber weapons were also seized, such as rifles, as well as explosives and bullet-proof vests.
