Another hundred residents in the East Java province have been injured, while thousands of citizens have been evacuated
At least 13 people have died and almost a hundred have been injured by the eruption of the Semeru volcano in the Indonesian province of East Java, according to a new death toll confirmed this Sunday by the Asian country’s disaster agency (BPNB).
The volcano erupted on Saturday, causing a dense cloud of smoke and ash that quickly covered the entire area. Hundreds of people have been evacuated and the BPNB has confirmed in a statement that there are houses that have practically been covered.
The authorities have warned that the risk remains high, so they have asked the population to exercise caution. The disaster agency has begun sending basic supplies to care for affected citizens, including food aid.
The volcano, at 3,700 meters and the highest mountain on the island of Java, already erupted in December last year, causing a wave of evacuations similar to the one experienced this Saturday.
Indonesia, in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, often experiences high seismic activity and earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur regularly.
