South Korea's national soccer coach Jürgen Klinsmann and his team couldn't get past a 2-2 draw against Jordan in the second group game of the Asian Cup in Qatar. Only an own goal from Jordanian Jasan Al-Arab in the first minute of injury time saved the favored South Koreans' equalizer on Saturday at the Al-Thumama Stadium in Doha.
Captain Heung-min Son initially gave Klinsmann's team the lead with a converted penalty kick in the 9th minute. An own goal from Yongwoo Park (37th) brought the equalizer before Jasan Al-Naimat put Jordan in front in stoppage time in the first half.
Klinsmann's warning
In the fourth place in the 2002 World Cup, Klinsmann once again relied on Bundesliga professionals Minjae Kim from FC Bayern Munich, Jaesung Lee from FSV Mainz 05 and Wooyeong Jeong from VfB Stuttgart.
After the 3-1 opening win against Bahrain in the continental championship, Klinsmann warned against complacency. “I would say that we are confident, but not too confident, and will play the Asian Cup game by game,” said the former national coach.
Klinsmann had to do without his injured goalkeeper Seunggyu Kim against Jordan. “Our intention was clear from the start: that we would be in the competition until the end.”
Jordan, who beat Malaysia 4-0 in their first game, lead Group E with four points ahead of South Korea. South Korea will face Malaysia in the final group game on Thursday.
The first two teams in the group and the best four of a total of six third-placed teams advance to the round of 16 of the tournament.
