Arsenal went ahead with the match against Brentford (2-1) to maintain their expectations of reaching fourth place in the Premier League, that this weekend reaches the twenty-sixth day. Mikel Arteta’s team is sixth in the table. But with one point and two games less than Manchester United, which precedes it and occupies the last place in the ‘Champions’ zone.
The London team took control of the game from the beginning, although they could not unbalance it until the second half. The defense of the box by the Danish Thomas Frank and the interventions of the Spanish goalkeeper David Raya delayed Arsenal’s task, which opened the scoring three minutes into the second half, when Emile Smith Rowe netted a great pass from Alexander Lacazette.
Even so, Arsenal did not breathe until the final stretch, when they scored the second in the 79th minute thanks to Bukayo Saka from a pass from Thomas Partey. Arsenal slowed down with homework done. That was when the visitors rounded Aaron Ramsdale’s box and pulled one back in added time with a goal from Christian Norgaard after receiving a pass from Kristoffer Ajer.
Newcastle stops West Ham’s desire for Champions
David Moyes’ Newcastle stopped West Ham’s desire at home (1-1) to get, at least momentarily, into the Champions League access zone, in a game where he knew how to stop the local momentum.
This despite the fact that West Ham went ahead after half an hour, with a goal from Craig Dawson, in a header. The visiting response came in the last minute of the first half, the work of Joe Willock, after picking up a rebound inside the area. In the second half he forced West Ham in search of getting ahead on the scoreboard again, but he could do nothing against the good defensive organization of Moyes’s team.
West Ham remains fifth, in the Europa League zone, one point behind a Manchester United that visits Leeds this Sunday. For Newcastle, the point allows them to maintain the dangerous seventeenth place, the last one to be saved.
Watford accentuates the crisis of Aston Villa
Watford took a step forward in their hopes of salvation in the Premier with the victory at Villa Park against Aston Villa (0-1), which accentuates the slump of the Birmingham team.
Steven Gerrard’s painting does not react. He has fallen to twelfth place in the standings, in no man’s land. He was not able to break his streak against a rival conditioned by the pressure of relegation who added the three points after eleven games without winning, with a goal in the 79th minute.
It was a pass from Ismaila Sarr that Emmanuel Dennis picked up that beat Argentina’s Emiliano Martínez as Roy Hodgson’s side regained their competitive pulse.
Watford’s fifth win of the season puts them third from bottom and four points behind Newcastle, which marks salvation.
Everton returns to the old ways
Everton, who seemed to react last day with the win against Leeds, returned to their old ways with another defeat, at St. Mary’s Stadium against Southampton (2-0), which places Frank Lampard’s team near the positions of decline.
The Liverpool team fell back into the mistakes of yesteryear and was unable to face an opponent who insists on reaching the European zone of the classification on time, where their rival intended to be.
Austrian Ralph Hasenhutti’s team has now gone four games without losing. He put the victory on track at the beginning of the second half with a goal from Stuart Armstrong from a pass from Che Adams and closed it six minutes from the end, when Everton were looking for the equalizer, with a great cross from Valentino Livramento to the area that Shane Long headed for beat Jordan Pickford again.
The defeat leaves Everton four points behind Watford, third from last and marking relegation. Southampton, tenth, is ten behind Arsenal, sixth.
Burnley reacts and trusts
Eleven games later, Burnley met again with the victory and achieved, against Brighton and at the Amex Stadium, their second consecutive victory (0-3) to revive their hopes of remaining in the English Premier.
Sean Dyche’s set does not give up salvation. The accounts come out. With four pending matches, he is four behind Newcastle and Everton, who mark the stay in the category.
Burnley took a step forward, who before the break had the game more than on track against a stagnant rival whose European chances were far away.
In the 22nd minute a combination of Wout Weghorst with Connor Roberts ended with a shot outside the box that went past Spanish Robert Martínez. And five before the break, another assist from Weghorst was used by Josh Bromwnhill to score the second.
It seemed to wake up Brighton that accumulates a draw and two losses in a row but was not able to beat Nick Pope. It deflated in the final stretch and the visitors took advantage of it to sentence the victory in minute 69 through Aaron Lennon who culminated a ball received from Jay Rodriguez.
