Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov called the dialogue between the administration of American leader Joe Biden and Russia through the sanctions against two ships and one Russian-related company participating in the Nord Stream 2 project a violation of international law. He made the corresponding statement on November 23 on Facebook.
According to the diplomat, the White House has been trying to complicate Russian-European energy cooperation for several years.
“Dialogue through sanctions is unacceptable and violates international law. We regard all attempts against Russian oil and gas exports to Europe as unfair competition that undermines the principles of a free market, ”the ambassador noted.
In addition, Antonov stressed that Russia categorically rejects accusations against itself regarding Russian energy policy.
“Such statements show the disrespect of the United States for its own allies, who are ready to build long-term mutually beneficial cooperation with our country,” he added.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced US plans to expand the list of sanctions targeting Nord Stream 2 to include Transadria Ltd and two vessels, one of which is called the Marlin.
Earlier in the day, Russian leader Vladimir Putin, during a telephone conversation with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, confirmed Russia’s readiness to ensure uninterrupted gas supplies to Europe, including using the capabilities of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
The construction of the SP-2 gas pipeline was completed on September 10. It was built from Russia to Germany along the Baltic seabed with the aim of direct gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The Baltic states, Poland, the United States and Ukraine are opposed.
