After making history with Real Madrid, with whom he won the ‘Pichichi’ five times in the Spanish LaLiga, ‘Hugol’ returned to Mexico to take the position of coach of Club América in 1992.
In that year, Antonio Carlos Santos retired from Club América to make the leap to Europe with FC Porto, however his departure from Coapa was very controversial due to a strong discussion.
In the sports space, the South American, two-time champion with Club América (1897-88 and 19988-89), openly called Hugo Sánchez “superb” and “bad.”
«The story was like this: I had a proposal to go to Portugal, Italy or River in Argentina and I am not a liar, that is real, they arrived, they called ‘Panchito’ (Hernández), I wanted to go to Porto because in Portugal they speak the same language, “I can play in the Champions League, so I decided,” he said.
«With the arrival of Hugo (Sánchez), Mr. Díez Barroso speaks to me and tells me that Hug is going to arrive and I told him: “Look, if he arrives, there will be a godmother. To begin with, that guy is arrogant, he is a bad guy, he has always been but nobody says anything, everyone stays silent as soon as we see that he is the emblematic figure of Mexico,” said Antonio Carlos Santos.
