Felix Marrugo, president of the Colombian Athletics Federation, confirmed to EL TIEMPO that the Olympic medalist Anthony Zambrano, the great figure of the Colombian delegation, will not be at the 2022 Bolivarian Games.
Why is Zambrano getting off?
This Thursday, Zambrano was present in Cali as an ambassador for the 2022 Under-20 World Athletics Championships. There he made vehement statements. He said that although the idea is to be on the podium, it is not yet known what can happen. “It is not an obligation to compete, because they have screwed me in other competitions, right here, so why do I have to go to that? I have not decided, I look to see what I do“Zambrano told the Cali media.
The athlete stated that he has differences with leaders. “It makes certain people sad here… It’s the economic thing. There is never support, there is never anything… Nobody manipulates me, I rule because I am the one who runs, one is the one who is on the track, to earn a misery”added the athlete.
The Colombian Olympic Committee reported that Zamabrano receives 7 million pesos a month for being part of the Excellence Athletes, plus another 4.5 million contributed by Inder del Atlántico. His personal trainer earns 16 million monthly thanks to an agreement with the Ministry of Sport. In addition, it was reported that all the expenses of preparing him abroad (tickets and lodging, rental stipends if applicable, etc.) are covered.
This newspaper learned that Zambrano was planning to take a Cali-Barranquilla flight around the end of yesterday afternoon. The athlete is one of the spearheads of the Colombian delegation that will take part in the Bolivarian Games, with the mission of defending the two titles that he has won in the last two editions.
