Some Gamestop USA are selling Anthem to 1 cent. Note that the price already includes taxes. This is the final scar for the BioWare game, whose value has been very low for years now, but which had never reached this point. Paradoxically it would be more dignified if it were given as a gift, because at least it would prove to be an interesting object to do some marketing.
In fact, it is as if the store were declaring that Anthem is no longer worth anything, not even the receipt to buy it. The price is so low that a user was able to buy 37 copies of the game without batting an eye (after all, that’s 41 cents in total, considering the taxes, so we don’t think it will go bankrupt).
According to a former GameStop employee, games are sold for a dime when all other attempts have failed – that is, when you recognize that nobody really cares and just aim to empty the stores.
Bear in mind that Anthem isn’t even that old as a title, as it was launched in early 2019. Much older games are being sold for much higher prices.
Anthem was BioWare and EA’s attempt to follow in the wake of Destiny-style live services. Launched after a massive marketing campaign, players found it was just a shadow of what it might have been. The updates failed to revive it and, given the lack of players, EA decided to close it permanently, without even giving the development team time to complete the relaunch project announced to the public.
It should be noted that Anthem is still sold at full price on the Gamestop website. So the offer of a penny per copy may only apply to some stores.
