Zelensky’s announcement came in a statement after he had a phone call with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, according to “Reuters”.
“I thank the Turkish president and the Turkish people for their great support,” Zelensky said.
He added, “The ban on the passage of warships into the Black Sea and the provision of significant military and humanitarian support is extremely important today.”
“The people of Ukraine will not forget that,” he added.
However, the Turkish official Anadolu Agency has not yet mentioned this in tweets on its official Twitter account about the call between the two leaders.
And she said in tweets through her official account on “Twitter”, that Erdogan told Zelensky that Turkey is making efforts to reach a truce as soon as possible to limit further losses to Ukraine.
On Friday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced that Ankara could not meet the Ukrainian demand by preventing Russian warships from reaching the Black Sea through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said his country was studying Kiev’s request, but added that “Russia has the right, under the 1936 Montreux Convention, to return the ships to their original bases, in this case the Black Sea.”
“Even if Turkey decides, after a legal process, to accept Ukraine’s request and close the straits to Russian warships, it will only be prevented from traveling in the other direction, away from their original bases in the Mediterranean,” he added.
