The clinical professors try to reach the deanship again, this time by the head of Obstetrics and Gynecology of La Arrixaca
The clinical professors will try to take control, once again, with the controls of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Murcia (UMU). If four years ago it was the head of Pediatrics at La Arrixaca, Manuel Sánchez-Solís, who unsuccessfully confronted the current dean, Carmen Robles, now it will be the head of Obstetrics and Gynecology at this same hospital, Aníbal Nieto, who represents the least to a good part of this powerful sector of the teaching staff in the elections of the teaching institution, which will be held on the next day 15.
Nieto will be accompanied, as number two, by the head of General Surgery at Morales Meseguer, José Luis Aguayo. Both are professors, as are three other members of the candidacy: the surgeon Luisa Martínez de Haro, Luis Alberto Bravo and Francesc Medina. “There was a feeling that a candidacy was needed from the clinical faculty. And, in that line, most of my colleagues thought of a profile, and here I am. After my 30 years of experience as a university professor, it is time to contribute, to give back to the UMU everything it has given me”, explains the head of Gynecology and Obstetrics at La Arrixaca. However, he clarifies, it is a “mixed candidacy”, which also includes preclinical teachers, such as Clara Ortiz, from the Department of Physiology, Juan José Gascón (Preventive Medicine and Public Health) or Matilde Moreno (Human Anatomy).
The dean incorporates a gynecologist from La Arrixaca, María Teresa Prieto, into her candidacy
The list headed by Aníbal Nieto will face Carmen Robles, who maintains her team, although with some additions. Among them, the gynecologist from La Arrixaca María Teresa Prieto, which is a nod to clinicians. It so happens that Prieto comes from the service directed by Aníbal Nieto himself. Other clinicians also appear on the list headed by Robles, such as the head of Pneumology at Morales Meseguer, Juan Miguel Sánchez Nieto, and the specialist in Infectious Diseases Elisa García, from La Arrixaca.

Moving and study plan
The Faculty of Medicine is in the process of moving to the new health campus, in La Arrixaca. Completing this process is “an important challenge,” says Carmen Robles. Next year, all classes will be held in the new facilities. The dean is also committed to improving care for mental health problems, which are on the rise.
Curriculum changes are another issue that the winning team will have to address. This issue, in fact, has generated friction in recent months. “We are advocates of reducing the theoretical part, in line with what other universities are already doing, so that there is more time available for the practical field, which is fundamental,” Aníbal Nieto underlines. The candidate is also committed to “a sustainable and healthy faculty”, in which sports practice is promoted.
