The comedian Angel Martin has acknowledged that he is terrified by the current inability “of distinguish between our lives and what happens on the internet“and that there are people who want things because others have them thinking that this will make them feel satisfied or happy.
This was stated in an interview on the occasion of the recent publication of the book Point for the crazy (Planeta), which includes the monologue with which Martín has toured theaters in Spain and Europe for two years to claim the importance of mental health.
“We are beginning to fall into the trap of confusing the number that appears in the publication “What we do with what we are really achieving.” For this reason, he recommended “taking a step back and starting to think very carefully about the use that each person wants to make of the Internet.”
Point for the crazy It is the third book that the comedian has published, after If the voices returnin which he narrated in the first person his admission to a psychiatric center in 2017 after suffering a psychotic break, and Behind the noisea manual in which he told how to stay upright without falling back into the hole.
With the monologue – which is titled one of the phrases that readers of In case the voices return-, Martín has already filled the WiZink Center in Madrid in 2023. But now he will return to this venue on December 30 to put an end to a tour that he has enjoyed very much and that has allowed him to prove that a show can be created that will go beyond laughter.
“With In case the voices return I wanted to try to explain what it’s like to suffer a psychotic break and how he had done it to get out of there,” he explained, highlighting that his intention was to check if he could help the reader. “I verified that it could be done and then I considered seeing if this can also be done in monologues.”
Psychiatrists and psychologists are the center of some of Martín’s jokes in the monologue and, although he describes his relationship with his therapist as “terrible” – which is why he decided “not to turn to anyone else” and “find a life” – he does not dismiss to these professionals and believes that, as in all unions, “there are very good people and some very bad“.
Although in recent years the focus has been on the need to pay more attention to mental health in Spain, Ángel Martín believes that “there is still too much judgment to whom he mentions certain things.” “People still don’t know how to listen without giving the person who is telling them something a different label.” The comedian, who recognizes that after suffering the psychotic break he has a brain “that is practically impossible to get mad“, advises being consistent with the decisions you make and knowing “what’s behind” them.
“I lived by inertia and without thinking”
In his case, recognizing that “until not long ago he was someone who I lived by inertia and without thinking“, he assured, while maintaining that it is important to fulfill dreams, which in his case, have been to “demonstrate that in Spain stand-up comedians” can perform in giant venues.
He refers to the title of his second book to insist that “there is too much noise around”, that “it manages to cut through all the layers.” “There comes a time when you don’t know if things are happening to you; If really the anxiety you are feeling is because of something of yours or is it because of something from a long time ago that is no longer there. It is essential to start looking for a little calm to find ourselves.”
Comedian, screenwriter, actor, musician and presenter, Martín, who has participated in well-known television programs, has stated that he is not very up to date with “the moves that each one has”, in relation to the exchange of accusations between presenters. He has limited himself to pointing out that they respond to “a competition for public attention. “Anything that happens right now is I want you to see me more than others.”
