Andoni Ortuzar (Sanfuentes, 1962) has thrown the towel. Before the movement of the bases and of a good part of the Bizkaia apparatus of Aupar as an alternative to Aitor Esteban and that in Gipuzkoa the most voted has been a third way, Markel Olano, Ortuzar has decided to give up his plans to continue for a room mandate and will not pass to the second round, which starts this week. Ortuzar took to the front of the main Basque Party since January 2013.
“I have decided not to go to the second round of the internal electoral process for the presidency of the Euzkadi Buru Batzar. It is a long meditated decision. […] The data that have come out of voting in our municipal organizations offer a photograph that perfectly reflects this situation. I have to thank the affiliation that I have supported mostly as its favorite candidate, obtaining as many supports as the sum of the rest of the proposals together. However, it has also been evident that there is a smaller but significant part of our militancy that promotes change, ”Ortuzar explained in a letter released in its social networks and in which it emphasizes that, in the first round, it was the more voted.
Unofficial data point to 110 ‘Batzokis’ won by Ortuzar by 70 of Esteban and about thirty Olano. In Bizkaia there was technical tie, in Gipuzkoa the Guipuzcoan defeated, that is, Olano, and in Álava, Navarra and Iparralde the president of the PNV was imposed. However, a more detailed reading showed a strong movement against the continuity of Ortuzar and the alignment of a good part of Bizkaia’s most relevant institutional positions with Esteban.
“When last Saturday, January 18, the aforementioned letter made public [para optar a continuar]my decision was produced after a long and contrasted internal debate about what was the best option for the immediate future of the party. Against my initial starting position, favorable to change, they convinced me and convinced myself that I had to offer me to follow another mandate, if the militancy wanted it. Seen the results, and also seen the development of this first round, I believe, however, that I must reconsider my position and return to my first intimate conviction, which was that I had to give way to renewal, ”adds the PNV leader .

I want to thank you for your support for those who have trusted me and you have proposed me in the first round to be president of the EBB, but I hope and I ask you to understand my decision. I must first think about the party and its future. Another candidacy has emerged with sufficient ambition to assume the presidency of the EBB. As well and civilized as we want to do a second round process with two candidates faced, the risk of division within the party would be high and irresponsibility. It is a moment of unity, and that is what I think I must promote now, ”he explains about Esteban.
