She explained that a system malfunction “at about 18:00, Saturday, June 18, 2022, led to the interruption of electricity supply in the country. Efforts are being made to restore power as soon as possible.”
For several months, the country has witnessed many power outages that sometimes extend to eight hours.
At the end of January, the electricity supply in Malawi was cut off for three days due to Tropical Storm Anna, which killed dozens of people in southern Africa and caused damage to a major power plant in the country.
The new power outage angered Internet users.
“Let us simply acknowledge that our country is poor and bankrupt,” a resident commented on Facebook, adding, “In other countries, if the power goes out for ten minutes, the minister presents an apology to the people.”
Malawi faces major economic difficulties and witnesses many corruption scandals.
Less than 15 percent of the population of more than 19 million people has access to electricity, which is generated by more than 90 percent in hydropower plants, according to the World Bank. More than half of the country’s population lives below the poverty line.
