Mexico City.- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador asked the Government of Israel this Friday to clarify whether it is protecting Tomás Zerón, former head of the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC), for his alleged links to suppliers of weapons or espionage equipment that the Mexican Government purchased at the time.
During his morning press conference, the president demanded that Israeli authorities and diplomatic representatives respond to the request for the former federal official, accused of torturing those allegedly responsible for the disappearance of the 43 Ayotzinapa students, to be handed over to Mexico.
“No country and no government can provide protection to torturers. Israel cannot, the government of Israel cannot, and should not, under any circumstances, protect Zerón.
“There is talk that he is being protected, and the Israeli government must clarify this. They are protecting him because he was linked to arms and equipment suppliers. We are talking about the disappearance of young people and the alleged perpetrators of this disappearance. In addition, it is claimed that there is evidence that he directed the entire torture operation. We are very interested in knowing who was tortured and who was not, because what the judge did was release everyone,” he said.
The head of the Executive regretted that, until now, the Government of Israel has not responded to Mexico’s requests.
Speaking to Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena, he expressed his confidence that the Embassy of that country would be able to inform his Government.
-Have you received no response from Israel to the letters sent to the prime ministers? he was asked.
“No, no, and I hope that now that this press conference is being broadcast, the Ambassador of the Government of Israel in Mexico will help us by informing her Government and that our request for Mr. Zerón not to be protected remains in place,” he added.
The Undersecretary of Human Rights, Arturo Medina, recalled that the Judiciary has released 65 people, allegedly involved in the disappearance of the students, as a result of the accusations of torture with which Zerón would be linked.
“First, 14 people were released with the first lawsuit, and then four more trials were initiated and as a result of this ruling, 65 people were released,” he said.
López Obrador recalled that there is evidence against several of those released, who were accused of the disappearance of the students, so it is important that Zerón appear before the Mexican justice system.
