While Western countries hold Russia responsible for the crisis in Ukraine, the real blame lies with the United States and its partners in the European Union. This opinion was expressed by an American political scientist, professor at the University of Chicago John Mearsheimer in interview YouTube channel King’s Politics.
He said that since 2008, the United States and European countries have made a number of irreparable mistakes that have led to an aggravation of the situation around Ukraine. Among them: the expansion of NATO to the east and plans to include Ukraine in it, the potential expansion of the EU and, in particular, plans to join Ukraine, the threat of a color revolution in this country.

Mearsheimer explained: for Russia, Ukraine’s accession to NATO poses an existential threat. “The fact that people in the West do not understand this amazes me. The idea that you can simply bring the forces of the US-led military alliance to the Russian borders, and the Russians will not be embarrassed, is simply unthinkable! the professor was indignant.
He also recalled that the 2008 war with Georgia was supposed to show Western countries that Moscow does not accept NATO expansion to the east.
“The ties between the West, especially the US, and Ukraine are getting stronger. We arm and train Ukrainians. At the same time, we are committing a number of provocations outside Ukraine that really worry the Russians: in June 2021, the British stupidly send a destroyer into the territorial waters of the Russian Federation in the Black Sea, and the Americans send a bomber into the sky over the Black Sea off the Russian coast. It is clear to the Russians that NATO is moving east, turning Ukraine into a de facto member of NATO. The Russians are no longer interested in negotiations,” Mearsheimer concluded.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he had decided to conduct a special operation in the Donbass. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky announced the introduction of martial law in Ukraine and the severance of diplomatic relations with the Russian side.
