As a continuation of its initiatives to adopt sustainable practices, American Hospital Dubai reinforced its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint through the official launch of its sustainability policy. The launch of this policy comes in line with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, declaring 2023 as the Year of Sustainability.
American Hospital’s Sustainability Policy is a governance and influence charter, to regulate current sustainability practices, integrate and measure performance, and enhance accountability to position the hospital to become the region’s leading healthcare model in reducing carbon emissions.
This policy represents loyalty to the United Arab Emirates, its people, and the planet we live on, with the aim of making the most of the hospital’s resources, improving their usage cycle, innovating sustainable solutions, addressing energy challenges using clean alternative methods, and empowering its employees to be active and proactive practitioners of this policy.
The initiative includes the first phase, which is divided into Frameworks 1 and 2. Framework 1 covers the direct carbon dioxide emissions of the American Hospital Dubai, including from its buildings, ambulance fleet and other facilities, while Framework 2 covers indirect energy use, such as electricity bills and the energy required to operate the hospitals and clinics. affiliated with it. Framework 3 will expand the project objectives, to cover all emissions outside Frameworks 1 and 2 arising from the company’s value chain, such as the use of products purchased from suppliers and ways to dispose of them in sustainable ways.
As the region’s leading healthcare provider, American Hospital Dubai’s mission is to make a clear and effective positive impact on the environment by measuring CO2 and consumption-based emissions, and enhancing community care.
The hospital’s sustainability practices framework includes saving energy by replacing traditional lighting with light-emitting diode (LED), increasing green spaces in its buildings, choosing the most energy-efficient primary diagnostic methods, which rely on air cooling rather than water cooling, as well as reducing Fuel emissions, environmentally friendly medical waste management, e-waste recycling, use of eco-friendly building materials, eco-friendly cleaning solutions, improving indoor air quality, reducing energy consumption to maintain ambient room temperature by controlling the flow of cooled air rather than heating Previously chilled air, combined with healthy farm-to-table food practices, contribute to helping it achieve significant carbon reduction results.
Furthermore, the hospital is currently undergoing a transition towards a 100% paperless environment for staff and patients, and a gradual reduction in plastic use. Water dispensers have also been installed in each building, encouraging individuals to fill their reusable bottles.
The hospital succeeded in reducing the energy use intensity (EUI) from 47.00 in 2020 to 34.00 in 2022, which resulted in saving about 20,384,129 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, in addition to saving 2,176 gallons of water per day using faucets with zero-technology. touch, and 21,900 liters per year using dual flush toilets.
The company also recycled 3,653 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions from waste and 2,145 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions from cars annually, and planted the equivalent of one acre of forest cover by greening its buildings and surrounding spaces within its sites. It planted 261,359 trees from seedlings over 10 years.
The hospital’s use of recycled materials includes carpeting made from partially recycled raw materials, phthalate-free vinyl flooring to reduce water use and cleaning, chairs made from 50% ocean recycled plastic, 100% polyester or urethane foam cushions, and Environmentally friendly cleaning operations in all its buildings.
Welcoming the official launch of the sustainability policy, Sherif Bishara, CEO of the American Hospital Group, said: “We are proud to announce the American Hospital’s sustainability policy, which is in line with 2023 as the Year of Sustainability declared by the President of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.” “We are fully committed to supporting the UAE in achieving its sustainability goals, and our sustainability policy is the culmination of our efforts over the years to integrate it with our mission, vision and values.”
