Workers from 25 different countries perform more than 60 professions, making up a workforce “marked by diversity”
Amazon’s first robotic logistics center in Murcia celebrates its first year of activity in the Region this month. Inaugurated with the commitment to create 1,200 jobs in the next three years, the center has completed its first year of activity with a staff of more than 1,000 people.
“We are very proud to have brought Amazon to Murcia and we are sure that together we will contribute to improving employment and economic development in the region,” celebrates Will McLean, head of the center that opened in September 2021.
Amazon offers all kinds of jobs for all kinds of people: with or without work experience, recent graduates or with doctorates, who perform more than 60 different professions that exist only in this center.
In addition, its employees come from 25 different countries, including the United States, Peru, France, Morocco, Italy, Venezuela and Spain. 37% of the workforce is made up of women, a figure that is significantly above the average for the logistics sector -22% in Europe, according to data from the European Commission-.
Technology at the service of security
The center closes its first year after having managed 64 million product units. All this has been possible “thanks to the work of its employees, whose safety remains the number one priority”.
The advanced technologies of these robotic centers constantly support “safer ways of working” for those who work in their facilities. Some examples of these technologies are automated guided vehicles and four-sided yellow racking towers, which assist employees by bringing items closer to them, reducing the amount of commuting through the facility.
Additionally, palletizing and depalletizing robots seek to improve experience and well-being by eliminating the need to use forklifts to transport pallets and automatically move multiple items from one location to another. In this way, employees can focus on other types of work that robots cannot do.
For their part, sorting robots are used to automate repetitive tasks, such as lifting, stacking, moving and placing packages. The robotic logistics center in Murcia has more than 54,000 racks and 2,895 mobile units, with the capacity to lift up to 1,500 kg.
«Creation of quality employment»
In its centers throughout Spain, Amazon seeks to promote local employment and give local professionals the opportunity to develop their profession in their region of origin.
This center “is another clear example of Amazon’s commitment to Spain.” The company recently announced that in 2022 it will create 2,000 jobs in the country, raising its workforce to a total of 20,000 permanent employees and placing it on its commitment to reach 25,000 permanent employees by 2025.
According to current growth forecasts, Amazon would be among the top 10 private companies with the largest number of employees in Spain. Many of the jobs Amazon directly created in 2021 are in high-skill, high-demand positions such as software development, information technology, and engineering.
In 2021 and 2022, Amazon received the ‘Top Employer’ certification in Spain, in recognition of its diverse and inclusive work environment and the professional development opportunities and training programs that the company offers to employees. Amazon has also been named the most attractive company to work for in the digital economy, according to the Randstad Employer Brand Research 2022, which surveyed 10,000 people in Spain, and earlier this year, the company was recognized by LinkedIn as one of the best companies to work.
