There have been numerous theories surrounding the Maddie McCann missing person case for years. Now an amateur investigator claims to have uncovered the case on his own.
Munich – It has now been almost exactly 17 years since Madeleine (Maddie) McCann disappeared. The British woman would now be 21 years old if she were still alive. The then three-year-old disappeared from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3, 2007, while her parents were out for dinner. An amateur investigator from Norway now claims to have solved the case.
“I solved the case”: Amateur investigator with new theory after Maddie’s disappearance
“I solved the case,” claimed Bernt Stellander, who says he is a former military police officer. The amateur detective blames the girl’s parents for Maddie’s disappearance. While her parents were eating, she is said to have fallen under the influence of sleeping pills and subsequently died. The incident is said to have occurred on May 2, 2007.
The parents are said to have staged a kidnapping and hidden their daughter’s body in the mountains near Luz. Family friends and British investigators are also said to be involved in the cover-up. According to Stellander, those involved revealed themselves in interviews and contradicted themselves during interrogations. To support his theory, he placed trail cameras in the mountains of Luz where suspicious activity was allegedly recorded.
He repeatedly made his claims to his parents in the hope that they would back down. Then one of the cameras recorded “suspicious people” “doing suspicious things,” reported Picture. But Stellander never found the girl’s remains. When the newspaper asked why so many people involved had kept quiet about the case for 17 years, it simply said: “One can only speculate about it.” The amateur investigator published his claims in a book. He did present his theses to the German public prosecutor anonymously. But there was no response, he said.
Mystery surrounding Maddie’s disappearance: Police warn against investigating on their own
Stellander’s speculations are not the first theories to circulate in the wake of Maddie’s disappearance. Some even believe she is still alive. However, Stellander’s thesis should be viewed with caution. In the summer of 2020 it became known that there was a murder suspect from Germany. Christian B. is said to have killed the then three-year-old girl. The 46-year-old is currently on trial for other alleged sex crimes.
For the public prosecutor’s office, Maddie’s case has not yet been solved. The authority does not expect any clarification soon. “I think it is impossible for the investigation into the Maddie case to be concluded this year, also in view of the fact that the trial will run until the autumn,” it said in response to an IPPEN.MEDIA query.
The police repeatedly warn against unauthorized investigations. “Hobby detectives with a penchant for social media activities are more likely to disrupt police investigations than to support them effectively,” said Alexander Poitz, deputy federal chairman of the police union (GdP), to the German Press Agency last year ( dpa). This could lead to false suspicions and endanger bystanders. “Let the police do their job,” appealed the GdP. Hobby detectives have also recently caused a stir in the missing Rebecca Reusch case.
