Almeida, the Portuguese town that lives in a starry fortification

Upon arriving in Almeida, the sensation is clear: here is a story. Its cobbled streets and its walled profile remember that this town, just 12 kilometers from the border with Spain, has witnessed centuries of military battles and strategies. From Roman times to the Napoleonic wars, every stone of its walls could tell a story of sieges, resistance and reconstructions.

Almeida is only half an hour by road from Ciudad Rodrigo (Salamanca), but the ideal would not be by car, but by air, to be able to contemplate the starry form of its fortification. Its design is undoubtedly the first thing that attracts attention. It was built in the seventeenth century, with its bastions and its revellines, to maximize the defense. And although its goal was to prevent the entry of enemies, today it invites us to cross its doors and discover its charm.
