Since 2010, more than 110,000 cases have been reported in the United States, the CDC says. From 2017 to 2021, the number of cases increased by approximately 15,000 per year.
However, the allergy is rarely diagnosed and is not well known among doctors. Therefore, the CDC estimates that up to 450,000 people in the United States may have an allergy.

The allergy is caused only by a certain species of tick that lives mostly in the southern and eastern parts of the United States.
