(Reuters) – Guanyu Zhou will race for Alfa Romeo next season as the first Chinese Formula One driver, the Ferrari-powered Swiss team announced on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old is currently a test driver for Alpine, owned by Renault, and also competes in Formula 2, where he is in second place overall with two races to be played in Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi.
Zhou will partner with the experienced Finn Valtteri Bottas, who switches from Mercedes to Alfa Romeo after five seasons with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
“I’ve dreamed since I was little about climbing as high as I can in a sport I’m passionate about, and now the dream has come true,” Zhou said in a team statement.
“Being the first Chinese Formula 1 driver is a breakthrough in the history of Chinese motorsport.”
