No progress in China
After the fear of a possible participation in the weekend of Chinese Grand Prix with only one car on the track, thanks to the uncertainties regarding the timing relating to the repair of the chassis following Alex Albon's accident in Japan, the Williams regularly took to the track for the Sprint qualifications in Shanghai with both the Anglo-Thai driver and Logan Sargeant. However, despite the risk averted, the outcome of the tests did not bring any satisfaction to the historic British team.
One step away from the last row all Williams
For 80 thousandths of a second, Albon denied the scenario of a potential all-Williams tenth and final row, with Yuki Tsunoda in 19th position and sandwiched between the two drivers from the Grove company. In this way, therefore, the former Red Bull driver will start from 18th place on the gridWhile Logan Sargeant from the twentieth century last square of the grid of departure.
Tires at the base of the elimination
Still a complex session for Williams, as confirmed by Albon: “We were the first to leave and this has damaged the tires – has explained – we tried to do a second lap at the end of SQ1, but the tires were worn and we had no grip. I don't know if the SQ2 was possible today, but I believe it there was the potential to be in a better position than we are now. We will treat the Sprint race as a session to learn more about the car ahead of qualifying.”
Could it have been done better?
Disappointment also highlighted by Sargeant, who admitted that there was potential to obtain a better result: “As in Japan I feel I did a good job, but unfortunately I placed at the back of the grid – he continued – I felt there was something more to the car, but I'm sure everyone else can say the same. The track was extremely slippery, with low grip which made things difficult. We have to do our homework at night. The positive thing is that the Parc Fermé will reopen after the Sprint race to allow us to change some things. We will use the Sprint race to collect lessons for Sunday's race and, of course, we will understand what we can do better in tomorrow's qualifying.”
