The director’s first feature won three Goyas: Best New Director, Best Supporting Actress, for Susi Sánchez, and Best Leading Actress for Laia Costa
With the permission of ‘Modelo 77’, which was made with five smaller statuettes, ‘Cinco lobitos’ was the other big winner of the night, with three goyas that may seem few but are the finishing touch to a circle that, as I said During the early hours of the morning, the brand new winner of the Goya for best new director, Alauda Ruiz de Azúa (Baracaldo, 1978), is already closing.
«Just a year ago we premiered at the Berlinale and it is like a perfect cycle. Saying goodbye to the film like this, now that we are all starting new projects and other things… It would be a very nice closing, “explained yesterday the director of this moving film about the efforts of a first-time mother, whom Laia Costa embodies in a role that the Goya for best actress has procured for her, who not only has to deal with her newborn but also has to take care of her sick mother (Susi Sánchez, who also won the Goya for best supporting actress) and the battered relationship his parents are going through.
Ruiz de Azúa is not a newcomer to the audiovisual industry. The director has been living in Madrid for years, where she has had a production company since 2012 with two other partners, Igloo Films, with which she has shot several shorts, some of them internationally awarded, and many advertising campaigns, but she waited to find a story that played enough to make the leap to feature film. Now, she tells her, that she is already writing again. “Let’s see if with the big head it’s easier to raise a project”, she wishes.
It is true that at a gala where there was finally parity in the categories of best new director and best director, it was relatively strange that ‘As bestas’ and ‘Modelo 77’, two films directed by men, returned to take most of the the awards. “Well, the fact that this parity and this change was already seen in the nominations is exciting and I think that what changes must be valued,” said Ruiz de Azúa, who had been struck by the fact that ‘Alcarràs ‘ left empty, despite having eleven nominations, the same as ‘Cinco lobitos’. «The prizes, if it is by one or two votes, well, it escapes me, the truth».

“There are changes,” Laia Costa said by his side, “but the room for improvement is amazing. The academy is made up of about 1,400 men and about 600 women. There is a difference, but I think we have lived through a Goya where we have had full women nominated for the first time in history, such as best production direction, debut films and second films by women who have had incredible success outside and within our borders… In other words, there is a change but also a lot of work to do. It’s hopeful.”
When Ruiz de Azúa was asked about what advice he would give to those who are starting out, he spoke of his own experience. «I made the first film late, but it is true that I always tried to bet on a personal project, a story to fight for. It is about trusting intuitions and trying to build the projects from there because it is where a more personal seed can be and find who they are as filmmakers ».
For his part, Costa was full of joy and insisted on what he has always insisted on: there has never been a plan to give life to this character to achieve a notoriety that he already has in other countries such as Germany. «It is curious because this role came to me through Alauda and from a very animal intuition. I sensed that I had to go. I loved Alauda and that coffee I always talk about. I really like to play the signs and I found many between this project and my vital moment, such as the nonsense that today is February 11 and this circle closes after twelve months of promotion. I let myself be carried away by the moment and I allow myself to enjoy it a lot,” said the actress. «I am especially excited that it is with Alauda because she is a new director and a debut feature and I remember what she said a year ago: ‘Hello, this is my first film, you are my first audience and it is my first international festival.’ I think that over the years I will think of ‘Five little wolves’ and she will look like a fool ».
The two also had a few words for their partner Ramón Barea, nominated for the Goya for the first time as a supporting actor for giving life to the father of the protagonist of ‘Cinco lobitos’, who left empty. «We would have loved her to take it, but Ramón has so much affection and respect from his colleagues, he is so loved in the cinema and in the theater, that I think a Goya would have been very good but he has other types of awards in his life. », pointed out the director. “In a year like this, get eleven nominations … I don’t know, I already feel that we were very awarded, although I would have loved the Goya for Ramón,” said Costa.
A place for the Goya
Among the jokes, a very juicy one. Where will Ruiz de Azúa and Costa keep their big heads? «It is a good question -responds the director- because my house is small. I will ask my son that he surely has some good idea, it will be a little crazy but fun ». Costa, for his part, will give it to his parents.
Among the most exciting moments, Ruiz de Azúa highlighted the best new actor award for Telmo Irureta. About Ramón Barea, nominated for the first time
