The lack of rain is not the only problem. The drilling of deep wells for irrigation systems in the surrounding area has contributed to the decline in groundwater levels.
José commented that he has observed a decrease of up to 50 centimeters in the level of other water sources such as cenotes and wells, only in the months of April and May.
The El Cuyo Lagoon in Crisis
The situation in El Cuyo is equally bleak. Manuel Sánchez, director of the Environmental Management Unit, explained that the fires in the Río Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, together with the drought, have left a lagoon completely dry.
Previously, the water in this lagoon reached up to three meters deep, but today it is arid land with dry mangroves.
“Before we did kayak tours of 5 to 15 kilometers, since the water was at its maximum level. Now the lagoon is completely dry, and we have had to switch to bird watching tours and walks through the jungle,” Sánchez commented.
