Russia launched an offensive in the Kharkov region to create a sanitary zone
Russian President Vladimir Putin explained the active offensive of the Russian Armed Forces near Kharkov. According to him, the Russian military needs this in order to create a sanitary zone in this territory.
This is theirs too [Украины] guilt. Because they fired and continue to shell residential areas of the border territories, including Belgorod. (…) And I said publicly, if this continues, we will be forced to create a sanitary zone. That’s what we do
This, according to the Russian leader, is necessary to protect Russian territory from shelling by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. At the same time, in mid-May, Putin emphasized that the capture of Kharkov was not yet included in the plans of the Russian army.
