SAO PAULO (Reuters) – The Agricultural Defense Agency of the state of Pará (Adepará) said on Wednesday that the result of a suspected case of the disease Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), known as “mad cow disease”, was positive. in the region.
According to a statement, this is the atypical form of the disease, which appears spontaneously in nature in older animals, causing no risk of dissemination to the herd and humans.
To confirm the situation, samples were sent to the laboratory of the International Organization for Animal Health (OIE, its acronym in English) in Canada and the result has yet to be released.
Adepará said that the case was identified in the southeast of the state, in a property that has 160 head of cattle, which is already isolated by the agency.
“The property was inspected and interdicted preventively,” he said.
Also according to the agency, the state government is in permanent contact with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), to deal with the issue with transparency.
The ministry had said on Monday that it was investigating a suspected case of the disease.
