The general election has been over for over a week. But Angela Merkel has not yet commented on the result of the union. What is she doing with her silence?
Berlin – Angela Merkel (CDU) is still very popular with German citizens. This is shown by the current ZDF “Politbarometer” from October 1st. The Chancellor is still in first place in the assessment of sympathy and performance (“What do you think of?”) With an average value of 2.3 on the scale from +5 to -5. With 2.2 just behind, Olaf Scholz (SPD) follows, who has improved a lot. In last place again came Armin Laschet (CDU), who deteriorated very much and is now only rated at minus 1.2.
Angela Merkel is silent on the election defeat: CDU members distance themselves from the Federal Chancellor
But within the CDU, after the election defeat, the accounting with Merkel already seems to be running. So said the Junge Union boss Tilman Kuban der World on sunday: “In the CDU, no stone can be left unturned.” He called for a new orientation in terms of content and personnel. Friedrich Merz said of the newspapers Funke media groupthat the CDU has become lazy to think. Both statements can also be understood as a demarcation from Merkel.
According to a survey, a majority of Germans also believe that Merkel is partly to blame for the Union’s electoral defeat. 54 percent agree with the statement that the Chancellor was “complicit in the historically worst CDU result in a federal election – due to the way in which she passed the CDU chairmanship,” as a Civey poll published on Wednesday (29 September) shows .
After the federal election: Merkel is silent on the election defeat – Tactical reasons are suspected in Union
But at first Merkel hardly commented on the outcome of the election. She congratulated Scholz on his election victory, announced the federal government on Wednesday (September 29). But that must have happened in silence, because nobody noticed. At first, we don’t hear from her about the disastrous situation in the Union either.
According to image-Zeitung, the Union suspects that Merkel’s silence is primarily for tactical reasons. She does not want to be associated with the historic defeat of her party. The silence is therefore also a damage limitation. Her plan, one of the party leaders, to pass the power on to a successor from the Union at the crowning conclusion of her chancellorship, has all but failed.
