Argentine President Javier Milei continues his inflammatory rhetoric, which has generated a series of diplomatic crises with several countries in the region. After tensions with Brazil and Venezuela, bilateral relations with Colombia and Mexico are now in the spotlight.
The conflict was triggered when Milei called the Colombian politician Gustavo Petro a “terrorist murderer”, which led the Colombian government to demand an apology and announce the expulsion of Argentine diplomats from the country.
Simultaneously, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, reacted to Milei's statements, accusing him of despising the Argentine people.
“Milei stated that I am 'ignorant' because I called him a 'conservative faco'. He is right: I still do not understand how Argentines, being so intelligent, voted for someone who is not accurate, who despises the people and who dared to accuse his countryman Francisco of being a 'communist' and 'representative of the Evil One on earth', when he is the most Christian Pope and defender of the poor that I have ever known or heard of. Post data: I hug Gustavo Petro,” he wrote on their social networks.
Despite the tensions, the Mexican embassy has confirmed that there will be no break in relations with Argentina.
The Mexican Embassy in Argentina highlighted the strength of the bilateral relationship based on mutual respect and cooperation.
On their social networks, the diplomatic representation denied information that suggests a conflict between both countries and the alleged expulsion of diplomatic personnel.
“We deny such claims, the relationship between Mexico and Argentina is solid, based on mutual respect and bilateral cooperation,” the Embassy stressed.
According to Argentina's Online Politics, Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena wanted to fire that country's diplomatic staff in Mexico, however, López Obrador stopped her.
For his part, Javier Milei supported the message from the Mexican embassy, pointing out an apparent willingness to maintain stable ties with Mexico despite its controversial statements.
“HERE LEAVING THE OPERATOR 'online politics' IN EVIDENCE… I'm sure that later they will come out to cry persecution for them and their little friends from the communiqués for exposing them to their lies… Has anyone wondered why those from the communiqués defend so much to liars?” he wrote in X.
