The year ends with 60 million red numbers, still affected by the pandemic, since only 43% of previous air traffic has been recovered
Aena has reduced its losses in 2021 to 60 million euros, which represents a reduction of 52.6%, compared to the ‘red numbers’ that were recorded a year earlier, as reported to the National Securities Market Commission ( CNMV) the company, which highlighted that this data continues to reflect the impact of the Covid-19 crisis, but represents half of those registered in 2020.
In 2021 there has been a progressive increase in passenger traffic in the Spanish airport network of 57.7% compared to 2020, with a recovery of 43.6% of the 2019 traffic. The year 2021 closed with almost 120 million passengers in the network of Spanish airports, with a growth in national traffic of 54.2%, while international traffic increased by 60.8%. If the data from Luton Airport (London) and the six Aena Brasil airports are included, the number of passengers amounts to 136.3 million (an increase of 52.7% compared to the same period in 2020), which is equivalent to to a recovery of 44.4% of the traffic of the same period of 2019.
Total consolidated revenues stand at 2,393.3 million euros, 6.7% more than in 2020. Aeronautical revenues were 1,332.2 million euros, 35.1% more than in 2020, while commercial income, with 799.2 million euros, has experienced a decrease of 23.6%.
As a consequence of the health crisis and the measures adopted by the public authorities to deal with it, Aena formulated in January 2021 a proposal for discounts to commercial operators of duty-free activities, shops, restaurants, vending machines, financial services and advertising in relation to the Minimum Annual Guaranteed Income (RMGA) with the aim of adjusting the contracts in a balanced way to the situation of the parties, both highly affected by the pandemic. More than 90 commercial operators accepted Aena’s proposal.
