The deletion from the calendar of Chinese Grand Prix 2023 inevitably kicked off applications from numerous countries to be able to replace next year’s round of Shanghai, while at the same time allowing F1 to return to the 24 races scheduled for 2023. Since the announcement of the disappearance of the Chinese weekend, the circuit that momentarily seems to have more chances would appear to be the Portuguese one in Portimão, but the location of the event between the Australian GP and that of Azerbaijan has generated further rumors about the possibility of being able to organize the race on the Asian continent.
China, which would therefore have hosted F1 after the weekend of Melbourneindirectly indicated the hypothesis of a second race on Australian soil, and more particularly on the historic street circuit of Adelaide. The track, which in 1985 became the site of the first edition of the Australian GP, was often the scene of decisive appointments for the assignment of the world title: among these, the one that saw Nigel Mansell’s tire burst in 1986, and which denied the Englishman the victory of the world championship in favor of Alain Prost. Or, the highly contested contact between Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill in 1994, which led to the first world championship victory in the German’s career, without forgetting the 1990 edition, remembered for being the 500th race in the history of F1. In 1995, Adelaide welcomed F1 for the eleventh and last time, before moving onto the Melbourne track.
However, the CEO of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation directly denied any kind of dream or hope about a possible return of Adelaide, Andrew Westcottwho thus expressed himself to the microphones of speedcafe.com: “We have disclaimers in place to make sure that Melbourne remains the only one in Australia – commented – and it is very important that it remains part of the contractual agreements for the future. We have a strong position, as evidenced by the crowds this year, so I think the big picture I’m most focused on from a positive point of view is the growth of Formula 1, as a show and as an attraction for tourism and the visits”.
