The diversity classification tool of video game characters boasted by Activision Blizzard it earned the American publisher more criticism than acclaim, so much so that it had to to apologize to the community. Quite simply, for many it would reduce diversity to strange and degrading metrics.
Activision Blizzard’s goal was actually very different and aimed to show the work the company is doing to increaseinclusiveness of his games, creating different characters.
The problem is that such a tool is decidedly embarrassing, above all because it reduces diversity to numbers and, in fact, establishes selection criteria that appear quite racist, for example by establishing a certain character model as normal, around the which to build the differences by distancing oneself from them.
In short, the intentions were good, but the result leaves a lot to be desired. So the company had to run for cover by declaring that the new tool has been tested internally but is not yet in use among the development teams. He also updated the blog post in which he announced it to better explain its function and how it is not the only initiative aimed at protecting diversity in its games.
Of course, he also apologized to anyone who felt offended.
