By law, the government of the State of California in the United States requires that if a company’s board of directors has six or more members, at least three of these people must be women. However, by the end of 2021, Activision was unable to achieve the minimum.
When questioned, a representative from Activision Blizzard told Axios that hiring a third woman was impossible, since the negotiations with Microsoft were an impediment. This was what was said about it:
“Since the Company’s current directors would no longer continue to serve on our Board of Directors following the consummation of our proposed transaction with Microsoft, we were unable to conclude the process in 2021.
We will continue our efforts to appoint a new director.”
However, it is important to mention that this law is not new, since it was established in 2019. That is, Activision had two years to hire a third woman to serve on its board of directors., and during all this type they avoided carrying out this process. According to a report, negotiations with Microsoft began a couple of days after The Wall Street Journal revealed Bobby Kotick’s involvement in workplace abuse cases at this company.
This information comes to light during a period in which Activision Blizzard is seen as one of the worst companies in the industry, this after the toxic environment in these facilities was revealed. Although Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, has vowed to change this workplace culture, this would happen until the acquisition of the company is completed, something that is still far away.
On related topics, an EA executive criticizes Activision Blizzard. Similarly, the company talks about the rumors of the delay of this year’s Call of Duty.
Editor’s note:
Activision Blizzard doesn’t have an excuse. They had at least a year and a half to hire a third woman for their board of directors. However, considering the kind of work culture that took place during Bobby Kotick’s watch, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
