More than 1,000 people have staged this Friday a new attempt to enter Melilla from Morocco, which has finally been avoided, as reported by Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska at the press conference after the extraordinary Council of Ministers held this Friday. The Minister of the Interior highlighted the collaboration of the Moroccan authorities on the border. “The coordination in the control of our borders is perfect”, he assured.
The autonomous city has been registering a new episode of strong migratory pressure for three days, which began on Wednesday, when a group of 2,500 people tried to access Spanish territory and 491 of them succeeded. Yesterday, Thursday, a new attempt was made in which 1,200 people participated and 380 achieved their goal, according to the Melilla Government Delegation. The Government delegate, Sabrina Moh, announced yesterday a reinforcement of almost 100 Civil Guard and National Police agents at the border.
This Friday morning, after a night in which gusts of wind of 90 kilometers per hour were recorded, several groups of migrants have been located some distance from the border perimeter between Spain and Morocco in Melilla and have begun to approach the fenced, so the Civil Guard has deployed numerous patrols in different areas and a helicopter for surveillance from the air, reports Efe. The Civil Guard has been deployed in Villa Pilar, one of the vulnerable areas of the perimeter, located in the vicinity of the Melilla airport, and where the jump took place on Wednesday. They have also assigned patrols to the area between the border crossings of Beni-Enzar and Barrio Chino, places through which the migrants entered this Thursday.
“In recent days we have had two assaults with significant violence towards the Melilla fence. Such important assaults in the number of people had never been seen”, explained the head of the Interior, stressing that they are “European borders”.
The entry of more than 850 people in two days has once again pushed the Temporary Immigrant Stay Center (CETI), the reception resource dependent on the Secretary of State for Migration in the autonomous city, to the limit. After years of overcrowding and after a critical stage during the pandemic, the 782-bed facility had been emptied to its historic low with just 57 residents. After the two jumps, the capacity is again exceeded with 895 people and Migration refuses to accept a single more migrant.
