Despite the rapidly increasing number of corona cases, Hong Kong is trying to stick to its “zero corona strategy”.
Hong Kong – On Thursday alone, the authorities reported 6,116 more infections. The high number of cases has led to hospitals and quarantine facilities being overburdened, as current rules mean that every infected person must be isolated.
To create more space, Prime Minister Carrie Lam announced on Wednesday that at least 10,000 hotel rooms should be booked to accommodate patients with no or only minor symptoms. In addition, it was considered to use 3000 new public apartments to accommodate infected people. However, critics doubted that the additional capacity will be enough. Health experts warned that the number of daily corona cases could rise to 28,000 per day by mid-March.
As reported by the Hong Kong “South China Morning Post”, it is also being considered to test the entire population of the Chinese special administrative region. According to this, each of the approximately 7.5 million Hong Kongers could be tested for the virus three times in the coming weeks.
After two years of largely successful prevention of the virus, the number of new infections in Hong Kong has reached new record levels in recent days. Nevertheless, China’s head of state and party leader Xi Jinping called on Wednesday to take “all necessary measures” to contain the virus again. Unlike Hong Kong, China has been largely successful in pursuing its zero-Covid policy so far. (dpa)
