Terrible tragedy that has happened this morning in Bulgaria. At least 45 people have died after the fire of a bus on a highway near the city of Bosnek. As reported by the Ministry of the Interior, among the deceased there are 12 children.
The fire, whose origin is still unknown, occurred around 2:00 in the morning, within the highway that connects Turkey with North Macedonia. The vehicle’s registration, apparently, is from the latter country. “The bus was traveling from Turkey to North Macedonia and caught fire after crashing into the guardrail on the Strouma highway “, relates the Bulgarian agency BTA.
According to ministry sources, only seven people have survived the event, after which they were transferred to the hospital with wounds “not life-threatening”. The bus was returning to Skopje, along with two others, from a weekend trip in Istanbul.
Complicated section
Before the accident, the buses reportedly carried out a stop at a gas station to rest. Stanislav Vladimirov, mayor of the nearby town of Pernik, said the vehicle collision destroyed about 50 meters of guardrail. As he explains, it is one of the most difficult road sections in Bulgaria, in which numerous accidents occur. In addition to standing on a slope, the road was wet.
The bus could have collided with the guardrail on the right side, and then cross the lanes and end at the highway division. According to Interior Minister Boyko Rashkov, the friction between the bus and the guardrail may have caused the fire, although the investigation is ongoing to clarify the causes.
