Recently, a report stated that Activision has no plans to release a new Call of Duty this year. Although many celebrate this information, pointing out that the series needs a break, similar to the one Ubisoft took with Assassin’s Creed after the release of Syndicate, one analyst has pointed out that this delay would be a big problem for the industryas it would have negative repercussions for the sale of games at full price, and would give a boost to the market for games as a service.
Mat Piscatella, a member of the NPD group in the United States, was one of the first to comment on the report shared by Bloomberg. Via his Twitter account, the analyst noted that a year without Call of Duty would have negative repercussions for the full-price gaming market, as well as in stores. In addition to this, it has been pointed out that games like fortnite war zone and halo-infinite they would use this space to reinforce their popularity. This was what he commented:
“This would be a huge blow to retail and the premium gaming segment in general.
It would also accelerate the shift from premium releases that consumers buy in advance, to games backed by DLC/MTX sales. I’m not sure the acceleration can slow down afterwards.”

Let’s remember that Call of Duty games, regardless of their critical reception, are always positioned at the top of sales year after year in markets such as the United States and Europe. Although the report mentions that 2022 will break this trend, Activision has indicated that they plan to release games in this series in the coming monthsbut did not speak openly about the next main installment.

Editor’s note:
Although it is true that taking a year could have a positive result, the market is not willing to give this space. A year without Call of Duty would have huge commercial repercussions, and could very well turn the tide of trends in this industry. Activision could well find itself between a rock and a hard place.
