Czech tennis player Barbora Krejcikova, world number 13, has charged against “unprofessional comments” about his appearance on the American television network Tennis Channel.
The Wimbledon champion was participating this week in the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia, the culmination of the women’s regular season, where she lost on Friday in the semifinals against China’s Qinwen Zheng.
Apparently, Jon Wertheim, a prominent American tennis journalist, did not realize he was on the air and made offensive comments. “Who do you think I am? Barbora Krejcikova? Look at the forehead when Krejcikova and Zheng come out on the court,” he said.
It didn’t take long for the video to go viral on social networks, and the Czech woman did not hesitate to respond on X (formerly Twitter). “You may have been aware of recent comments made on Tennis Channel during coverage of the WTA Finals that focused on my appearance rather than my performance. As an athlete who has dedicated herself to the sport, it was disappointing to see this type of unprofessional comments. “This is not the first time something like this has happened in the world of sports.”he indicated.
“I have often chosen not to speak, but I believe it is time to address the need for respect and professionalism in sports media. These moments distract from the true essence of sport and the dedication that all athletes bring to the field. I deeply love tennis, and I want to see it represented in a way that honor the commitment we made to compete at this level,” he concluded.
It is not the first time that an announcer has been criticized for comments about a tennis player’s appearance. In 2013, the BBC apologized after presenter John Inverdale said of French player Marion Bartoli after winning Wimbledon: “Do you think Bartoli’s father told her when she was little: ‘You’re never going to be pretty, you’re never going to be a… Maria-Sharapova, like this that you have to be a fighter and a fighter?
