New addition
There McLaren adds a new driver to the already quite large list of talents who wear the suit of the Woking team in the various categories: he is the 19-year-old British Taylor Barnardwhich was selected by the papaya team as Reserve driver for the Formula E championship. Barnard will therefore be the eventual replacement for the Jake Hughes – Sam Bird duo, who will start the season this weekend in Mexico.
Barnard's talent did not go unnoticed despite his young age, so much so that he was considered a 'protégé' of the 2016 Formula 1 world champion Nico Rosbergwho raised him within his Academy during the karting years. “In his role – we read in the press release released by McLaren – Taylor will work directly with the team in Bicester and Woking, contributing to the development of the team and increasing his knowledge and experience of the series.”.
Talent under construction
Barnard already gave a first taste of the 100% electric series a few months ago, driving as a rookie driver during pre-season testing in Valencia, where he was given the opportunity to show his qualities to the team. Barnard is originally from Norwich and entered the world of single-seater racing in 2020. Since then, he has finished second in the 2022 ADAC Formula 4 and the 2023 Formula Regional Middle East championship, being beaten in the latter case by our very own Kimi Antonelli . Also 2023, in his debut season in Formula 3he got his first victory in the category in the Feature Race at Spa-Francorchamps.
“I am super excited and honored to join the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team as a reserve and development driver – declared the young English talent – having the opportunity to work with a team like McLaren is a great opportunity for my future and I will do my best to support the team and work hard to learn as much as possible”.
