A nail appears in children’s plates, canteens suspended in all Monterotondo schools: “Criminal act”
For the fourth time in two years, a metal object has been found in one of the dishes served in the school canteens of Monterotondo. A case that shook the municipality north-east of Rome, where the discovery of a nail in the plate of a child from a kindergarten, immediately re-launched on the parents’ chats, prompted the mayor to suspend the canteen service for all the schools in the municipal area, in which there are about 1,700 students.
“More than a year after the last unfortunate and criminal episodes, there has been a new case of the discovery of a metal object in a meal served by the school canteen service”, wrote Mayor Riccardo Varone on Facebook, who defined the “criminal” act. “We are aware of the inconvenience that this choice will cause to families, but we believe it is the most right to protect children and the school world which is once again the injured party in this affair”, he added. “We will actively continue, for what will be our competences, to collaborate with the competent authorities for the identification of those responsible for criminal acts, against whom we will act, together with the school, in all locations”.
The last precedent dates back to early May 2021, when the mayor spoke of a “precise and criminal desire to damage the image and the work of educational institutions, the municipal administration, the service concessionaire”. After that case, the third since the beginning of the year, investigations by the carabinieri had begun, with checks on the entire production and distribution chain. The municipality had also decided to change supplier for the canteen service, with a new tender. However, the problem seems to persist, while the mystery about the origin of the metal objects remains. Also in this case the carabinieri will investigate, who have collected the complaint against unknown persons presented immediately after the discovery of the nail.
