Tom Bombadil will make his debut in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Powerand Vanity Fair has exclusively published the first photos and details relating to this fascinating and mysterious character created by JRR Tolkien.
Conspicuously absent in the film trilogy directed by Peter Jackson, Bombadil is an ancient and extravagant figure, passionate about nonsense songs and brightly colored clothes, who in the first book of the saga, “The Fellowship of the Ring”, helps save the Hobbits.
The authors of The Rings of Power wanted to do justice to the character and that’s why he was included in the second season of the television series, arriving on the Prime Video platform on August 29th. How will it be represented?
Not an easy debut
“There’s a reason why Bombadil wasn’t included in previous adaptations, because in some ways he’s a sort of anti-dramatic character“, explained JD Payne, one of the showrunners, to Vanity Fair.
“This is not a figure particularly involved in the action, observes the drama but for the most part does not participate in it. In “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the characters go there and stay for a while, so Tom offers them information that isn’t particularly relevant to what they’re doing or about to do.”
Apparently the same Tolkien wasn’t sure what role this character would playand confessed that he wanted to keep Bombadil in the story even though he had no clear purpose plot-wise.
This was precisely one of the reasons why the authors of The Rings of Power wanted to bring it to the screen. “It has no clear dramatic function that would justify its inclusion in a really great film adaptation,” showrunner Patrick McKay said.
“It is whimsical and magical, almost bordering on silly; but it also has the wisdom of the times, the music of the spheres, and the deep emotional grooves of ancient history and myth, and its conception and function are tied to Norse myths and have deep roots in the European fairy tale.”
“So, oddly enough, it’s the most Lord of the Rings thing about The Lord of the Rings, and also the first thing you’d cut if you were to adapt it as a film. But we have the benefit of a television series, so we’ll find a way to exploit that.” .
“Kristian Milstead, our production designer, had the idea to incorporate a star map on the ceiling to connect Tom to the larger universe and indicate that he has been watching the constellations for signs and the arrival of the Stranger.”
The authors of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power have questioned who Tom Bombadil really is, what interests him and how this figure could work in the series. Also for this reason they provided him with a second home, on the outskirts of a region called Rhun, which had turned into a desolate land.
The character will be played by Rory Kinnearwho we have already seen in the last four James Bond films in the role of M’s chief of staff, as well as in the role of Frankenstein’s creature in the Penny Dreadful series and as the British Prime Minister in the first episode of Black Mirror.
“There are people who knew him from the books, people who knew him from the movies and people who made it to 46 without knowing much,” the actor admitted. “I was honest: I hadn’t read it. I told them, ‘I’ll go read it and let you know,’ then I went downstairs to my partner, who knew the books and films, and told her about the part. ” Naturally she was thrilled.
