The General Police Information Commissariat, in collaboration with the Central Office of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) of Morocco, arrested around five in the morning in Ceuta, Madrid and Ibiza six individuals members of a jihadist cell considered very dangerous by researchers because they were already planning attacks in their communications. Some of them had already been arrested in other operations against this type of terrorism. In parallel and in coordination with the operation carried out in Spain, three other individuals were captured in Morocco, specifically in Tetouan and Fnideq (formerly Castillejos).
The operation is even more relevant due to the fact that the cell was linked to the Islamic State of the Sahel, Daesh’s franchise in that area and one of the most active jihadist terrorist organizations in the world today. At this moment it does not have the same strength that the Islamic State had in Syria but Its danger is increasing, according to the experts consulted by ABC.
The arrests in Spain were made in Ceuta (4), one in Madrid and another in Ibiza, and throughout the investigations it has been found that the terrorists They met with their colleagues from Morocco on both sides of the border, specifically in Ceuta and Tetouan. In the Autonomous City, the arrests were made in the Príncipe Alfonso and Vicedo Martín neighborhood, in the midst of a large police force, and in some of the searches, knives were seized.
The BCIJ, attached to the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), explained in a statement that through the searches at the suspects’ homes it was possible to seize not only this type of weapons, but also computer equipment which is now being analyzed by anti-terrorism experts.
“They were imbued with the ideology of Daesh,” say the Moroccan sources, who affirm that in those meetings on both sides of the border, They planned terrorist acts in the name of Daesh that would be committed before the members of the cell join the ranks of the branch of this terrorist organization in the Sahel region. “Some had already prepared the trip,” explain the sources consulted.
Regarding the people who were detained in Tetuán and Castillejos, the BCIJ indicates that they were placed under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office competent in matters of terrorism and extremism, “in order to clarify their internal and external branches and their degree of involvement in the terrorist projects planned by the members of this cell.
In recent years, the Sahel area has become the main scene of the activity of jihadist groups and a focus of attraction for combatants from other areas of the world. In fact, there are several joint operations by the Spanish and Moroccan Police against networks that facilitated the transfer of jihadists to join the Islamic State in this region.
It has also become known today that the National Court has ordered the imprisonment of the alleged jihadist arrested this Tuesday in Melilla for indoctrinating in the tenets of Daesh. In December the Police dismantled a violent group dedicated to recruitment and indoctrination of young people. Nine people were arrested in Melilla and another in Moroccan territory
Through the documentation seized at that time, the presence of the now detainee was detected, who displayed a clearly anti-western doctrine, and radical. This individual followed the tenets of Daesh and his propaganda work had an impact on his close circle of friends and family.
