A huge flood floods the Albacete municipality of Letur: the mayor speaks of four people “not located”

It had been warned since Monday, with the METEOCAM activated from 11:00 p.m. in the province of Albacete due to the orange warning due to heavy rains. The town of Letur, in the Sierra del Segura de Albacete, has been affected by a huge flood caused by the overflowing of its stream, which has caused dozens of cars to be swept away and several homes to have been flooded. This has been reported by some users through the social network X.

The mayor of Letur, Sergio Marín, has reported that there are four people who “are not located” and that the fire brigade rescue teams are focusing on their search, along with a Civil Guard helicopter, in addition to attending to the thirty people who may be isolated in their homes.

In statements to TVE, he stated that a flood of this magnitude is “unforeseeable” and that something similar had never happened in the municipality. “The catastrophe is capital and the first thing we hope is that there is no personal injury,” he concluded.

The City Council reported on Tuesday afternoon that the Provincial Council will make two tanks of drinking water available to residents, one of them located at the Era del Rosal intersection and another at San Antón.

Temporary shelter

In order to offer a place of shelter to people affected by the floods, a temporary shelter of the Immediate Emergency Response Team has been activated in the town. The 112 Emergency Service of Castilla-La Mancha explains that there are “numerous” affected homes, in which residents cannot continue, while part of the municipality is without basic supplies of electricity and water.

The hostel is located in the CEIP Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, and has the necessary facilities for about 60 people.

Since the activation of METEOCAM, at 11:00 p.m. yesterday and until 6:00 p.m. today, the 1-1-2 Emergency Service has recorded a total of 69 incidents generated by the intense rains and storms, distributed: 24 in Albacete; 22 in Ciudad Real; 11 in Cuenca; 3 in Guadalajara and 9 in Toledo.

The rainy season has also forced to interrupt circulation on the high-speed line between Valencia and Madridd due to accumulation of water between Siete Aguas and Chiva, stopped at the Albacete fork from 5:54 p.m.

It so happens that the Government of Castilla-La Mancha has raised the alert level today due to the rains, after the warning issued last night. At 3:00 p.m. this Tuesday, the Specific Plan for the Risk of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (METEOCAM) was activated, in emergency phase operational situation 1 in the province of Albacete.

The escalation of this Plan is motivated by the unfavorable evolution of the episodes of rain and storms predicted by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), which have intensely affected the town of Letur, in order to make available of the intervening resources all the means assigned to METEOCAM.

The municipal district of Letur, belonging to the judicial district of Hellín, is located in the Sierra del Segura and has a population of almost a thousand inhabitants. It is a municipality with a lot of weight in rural tourism, since in the nearby streams there are places with caves, waterfalls and bathing areas.

Sources from the Albacete Provincial Council, an institution that has canceled its institutional agenda this afternoon, has confirmed that the Sepei provincial firefighters are working in the Sierra del Segura to tackle the situation both in this municipality and in Molinicos, and this afternoon It is expected that data will be offered on the impact of the storms that are also causing significant flooding in streams and rivers in the area.

The torrential rains that are occurring in this mountain area also affect landslide problems on the roads, such as in one of the CM-3206 tunnels at the height of the Palomar Bridge-Fuensanta Reservoir (Yeste), for example. It is recommended not to travel unless strictly necessary.

Users are also collecting images of hail in the province of Albacete between Molinicos and Los Collados. In fact, 112 has reported that the CM-412 highway has been completely cut off at kilometer 208, due to a landslide. An hour later it was reopened to traffic.

The orange warning has also been activated in the Serranía de Cuenca. In the rest of the autonomous community there is a yellow warning due to the rains.

In the capital of Cuenca, the sports facilities have been closed, as a measure in response to the forecasts for this afternoon starting at 6 p.m., which is when the greatest intensity of rain is expected.
