The Region of Murcia is at the gates of what could be its first heat wave of the summer, with temperatures that could touch 45 degrees. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), a very warm thermal ridge will enter southern Spain starting next week. They foresee that the situation will lead to a considerable rise in temperatures that will affect the Region of Murcia, Andalusia and the Balearic Islands.
However, the increase in mercury will begin to be noticed from this weekend. On Saturday the thermometers in the Region will rise a couple of degrees to mark 36-37º in Lorca, Yecla and Murcia, while in Caravaca and Cartagena they will rise to 35 and 32 degrees, respectively.
This escalation of the maximum temperatures will continue on Sunday, when, with the exception of Cartagena (33ºC), the thermometers of the Region will reach 39 and 38 degrees of maximum. The minimum temperatures will remain stable, without exceeding 24 degrees in any case, according to Meteorology forecasts.
As of Monday, the mercury will skyrocket even more, exceeding 40 degrees in much of the regional territory. Thus, in Caravaca they will reach 42º, while in Lorca, Murcia and Yecla they will be around 41. Cartagena will experience a slight increase until reaching a maximum of 35 degrees. The minimums will suffer a slight increase in almost the entire Community, although it is not expected that tropical nights will be experienced, as they do not reach 25ºC.
According to the forecast that Aemet has so far, next Tuesday the Region of Murcia will experience a day of intense heat. The thermometers will shoot up to touch 45 degrees in several points (Murcia and Caravaca). In Yecla they will reach 43ºC, while in Lorca and Cartagena they will reach 42 and 38ºC, respectively. It will be precisely in the port city where a minimum of 25 degrees is reached, which will turn the early morning of Monday to Tuesday into a tropical night.
Precisely the Aemet warned at the beginning of June that this summer would once again be warmer than usual, “although with troughs or pockets of cold air that will give us a breather.” “The probability of a hot summer is high,” reveals Estrella Gutiérrez, Aemet spokesperson. A percentage of possibility that is around 50% and 70% and that will crown it as one of the five hottest of the period 1993-2016. “We can say that it will be among the warmest in recent decades,” adds Rubén del Campo, spokesman for the State Meteorological Agency.
