A group of millionaires have banded together to build a new utopian city for “high-ability individuals” in the wine region of California. Its name is Esmeralda, it will be located 90 minutes north of San Francisco in the Sonoma region, and its promoters say that it will become “the most beautiful new city in the United States.”
The driving force is the businesswoman Devon Zuegelwhich says the community will not just be an exclusive enclave for the elites, but that the town will offer a college campus feel where residents can “meet friends just by walking.”
Following the model of “an Italian mountain town”locals will be able to enjoy a place where “group dinners, creative projects, book clubs, and impromptu sports happen spontaneously,” according to the site Emerald website.
While it may seem like a distant dream, Esmeralda is getting closer to becoming a reality after investors were granted an exclusive option to buy a plot of land of 1 km2.
“If you dream of living in a small town and being surrounded by creative and talented people, we’re building this for you,” says Devon Zuegel.
But many people have doubts about the project, as stated in the Daily Mail: “How can you determine if people have enough capacity to live in the city? Is a credit check done?“asks one person.
“A cryptocurrency and AI town full of VCs near Healdsburg. Definitely what the locals want,” added another. “Where will the cleaners live?“one person joked.
Nancy Reyes, a Cloverdale neighbor, told the San Francisco Chronicle: “It seems like they want to turn it into something like Healdsburg, and not in a place for people like me.”
The nearby town of Healdsburg is struggling with a housing crisis, as housing continues to appear luxury developments, hotels and high-rise buildings.
However, Zuegel insists that Esmeralda will accommodate “a wide range of incomes and life stages.” To ensure this, he170 proposed homes They will be “from a diverse range of housing types and styles.”
“In our numerous on-the-ground conversations with Cloverdale residents over the past year, We haven’t heard anyone express concern. that our project will make the community unaffordable,” he explained.
“In fact, most residents have told us they are excited about its inclusive nature. Cloverdale hasn’t seen much market-rate housing development in the last decade, and the region desperately needs more housing supply for all income levels“he continues.
To achieve this, the development will be financed by Emerald Land Company, an independent, for-profit company backed by investors. But despite its high-profile sponsors, Zuegel says Esmeralda will be for everyone.
“Far from being a gated community, we plan to build an extensive new network of public access trails throughout the site, including the SMART Pathway and the Great Redwood Trail“he explained.
“The institute will host activities, events and classes that all Cloverdale residents will be able to enjoy. Historically, this land has been closed to the public. We plan to change that.“he adds.
