“All these fires They are currently contained. The work that was done and the reaction in those first moments has allowed us to talk about containment,” said the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, in statements to the Emol portal in which he indicated that for now no fatalities have been confirmed.
Tohá said, however, that the damage assessment is not yet complete due to the lack of light when the fire broke out. The “definitive review” will be done in the morning, he added.
The fire declared on Wednesday night in the upper area of Valparaíso forced the residents of the neighborhoods located on the Alegre and Cordillera hills to evacuate, for which two shelters were set up.
The National Defense Headquarters (Jedena) established “a security perimeter throughout the area that caught fire to have protection and to ensure that there is no type of crime in that area, which will probably be left alone during the night,” the minister stressed.
The devastating forest fires that broke out on February 2 in the Valparaíso region and mainly affected the neighboring city of Viña del Mar They were not declared extinguished by firefighters until February 7.
