In our daily lives, we all make a series of mistakes in both personal hygiene and habits that are not recommended according to experts. In all cases they are customs that we have internalized and that We don’t even stop to think, since they are part of our routines. There are many inappropriate gestures that can put our health at risk without us realizing it.
Among all those customs that are not recommended in the opinion of experts, Dr. María Marcos, dermatologisthas published on its Instagram profile four that it considers especially harmful from the point of view of our safety and hygiene, since they can cause an accumulation of bacteria that lead to more serious problems.
1. Be careful with bathroom sponges, they are a nest of bacteria
First of all, Dr. Marcos explains how harmful it can be to store and maintain sponges in the bathroom. A sponge is an inevitable source of accumulation of bacteria and germs, so it is essential keep them scrupulously cleanas well as renew them often.
Without realizing it, when we sponge our body when showering, we are extending the chances of causing skin infections. In addition, we must be especially careful with the material from which these sponges are made, since in many cases they will attack our skin because they are inadequate and incompatible. Therefore, to avoid these types of problems, perhaps we should consider not using them, or ask a dermatologist for advice beforehand.
2. Do not lower the toilet lid when flushing, a danger
The dermatologist places special emphasis on a second gesture that many of us carry out without thinking and that can cause ‘invisible’ problems. The expert explains on her networks that there are numerous studies that show that microparticles with remains of excrement They can be extended up to 1.5 meters when flushing the toilet.
Before forgetting to close the toilet lid, that simple gesture that should be our bible, we should stop to think that water is capable of volatilizing microparticles with remains of excrement, and that these are capable of reach a meter and a half distance. Apart from inhaling them if the lid is open, these germs could attach to our toothbrush if it is in their path.
Therefore, the expert’s advice is to take extreme precautions, closing the lid and, above all, keeping our toothbrush as far from the toilet as possiblesince it will then enter our mouth, and that is where health problems could begin.
3. Shower water, neither too hot nor too often
Another widespread and potentially dangerous habit is using excessively hot shower water. If we add to this that there are people who shower several times a day, what we will be doing is compromise the defense of the skin barrier.
Our skin in its most superficial layers fulfills the mission of protecting the body from ‘invasion’ of external agents. If we abuse very hot water and strong soaps, we will be weakening that natural barrier, and opening the way for germs, while causing dehydration. The shower, warm, is better, and only once a day.
4. Better not to use ear sticks
This is not the first time we have heard experts talk about this advice. Ear swabs, those products that in Spain we use for everything and at all ages (even babies) are not the best idea to protect our ears. Wax is a substance that occurs naturally, and this obsession with eliminating it, of course, should not be carried out with cotton swabs.
The reason given by Dr. Marcos (and the majority of specialists) is that with this, no matter how much care we want to be, we are pushing the wax inwardwhich could cause a plug. If we also insert it more than necessary, the danger would even involve rupture of the eardrum.
