The company Bring a Trailer put on sale, last September, a very special car, a collector’s gem not only for motor lovers, but also for film enthusiasts, a 1958 Bentley S1 Continental that belonged to none other than Alfred Hitchcock and that has been sold for 295,000 dollars (about 265,000 euros at the current exchange rate).
The vehiclewhich was manufactured under the specifications established by the legendary film director, features a sedan body with fixed side windows and six HJ Mulliner lights known as ‘Flying Spur’ in reference to the family heraldic insignia of Mulliner’s CEO at the time, Arthur Johnstone. It should be noted that it is one of 54 units manufactured in this style and one of 16 produced in a left-hand drive configuration that was initially delivered in Los Angeles. Once the filmmaker tired of this model, it passed into the hands of Dr. Gail Reingold, who remodeled it into D&D Classic Automobile Restoration of Covington, Ohio, where they applied a dark green paint with beige stripes over the gray that it initially presented.
For its part, the cabin of the automobile features wood trim, beige leather upholstery with brown piping, Wilton wool carpeting, air conditioning, Smiths instrumentation, a cassette stereo connected to a JVC CD changer, a Power Acoustik equalizer mounted on the sliding tray table below on the dashboard, polished ashtrays in the rear doors and a three-spoke steering wheel. At the time of sale the odometer read 40,000 miles (about 64,374 kilometers).
The propulsion system of this classic is a 4.9-liter inline six-cylinder engine equipped with twin SU carburetors mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox. Other features include: 15-inch steel wheels, BFGoodrich Silvertown Radial tires, power steering and power-assisted drum brakes.
The state of conservation of this piece of the history of the author of Psychosis is quite good and according to the seller it barely needs repairing some small oil leaks. This was delivered along with the renewal records, handwritten notes showing Hitchcock’s name as the former ownera toolbox, a bag and a DVD collection.
