Tesla is the brand that sold more electric cars over the course of 2021, approaching the record figure of one million vehicles registered in the world. The American brand founded by Elon Musk has literally beaten the competition, with several famous car groups that have to chase.
The news, however, is not Tesla’s supremacy, which could have been widely imagined. What matters is the struggle behind the American carmaker to get the role of major challenger. Well, according to a ranking drawn up by Clean Technica, and based on the sales figures declared by the houses and national associations, it is the Chinese group SAIC to occupy the second place. MG, Wuling and Maxus are among the brands with electric vehicles that contributed to the result, in particular Wuling which is the leader in China with its small cars.
In third place in the ranking is the Volkswagen group, which offers electric car buyers various battery-powered models also flying the Audi, Porsche, Skoda, Cupra flags. For Wolfsburg this is a disappointing result: having sold around 450,000 electric vehicles, it is 150,000 units behind SAIC. With which, moreover, it also has a joint venture.
In fourth place there is BYD, up one place compared to 2020, with 323,000 electric cars sold. Here too it is a Chinese brand, which however travels ‘alone’ also exploiting the production of batteries. BYD, also present in Norway, beat the group formed by Hyundai and Kia, fifth in the standings. According to market shares, Tesla has 21% share, SAIC follows with 14%, while Volkswagen has 10%. BYD and the Hyundai group are respectively 7 and 5 percent.
Stellantis, the group that controls the Italian brand Fiat (among the virtuosos of the electric market with the 500), is not in the world top five of electric vehicles, but is fifth in the mixed one between BEVs and plug-in hybrids.
